Video: Secret Santa Enlists the Aid of Tupelo P.D.

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -We all know the feeling when we see the blue lights in our rear view mirror. The blood pressure rises and we pull over, waiting as the officer approaches our vehicle.

Tuesday morning, several drivers in Tupelo were stopped by police, but as WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, it was a reason to celebrate.

As they were about to hit the streets, two officers on the ADAM shift got hundred dollar bills, and instructions from a Secret Santa.

“There are four officers who will be conducting traffic stops today and somebody will get a nice surprise, a 100 dollar bill.”

Moments later, marked TPD cars were patrolling on the West side of town, and Officer Brett Moyer stopped Stacey Johnson.

Stacey and his son Jordan, wasted no time thinking of ways to put their unexpected windfall to good use.

“We might go get mother something for Christmas, right now.”

What do you think you might spend it on?
“Maybe a video game, or something, like books or something.”

A few minutes later, Corporal Chamila Brown stopped another surprised motorist.

Wykhela Shannon was nervous when she first saw the blue lights.

“I’m going to be honest, I was terrified, like, what did I do , but to see that she just pulled me over to give me a hundred dollars, a Secret Santa? I want to tell that person thank you, that was really nice.”

Officers were honored to be Santa’s Helpers.

“We get to interact with the community in a positive manner. So many times people see us in a negative light, getting a ticket or we have to show up when they’re arguing with their significant others, this allows us to put a positive spin on a traffic stop.”

The Secret Santa wants to remain anonymous, but says wants to help others have a great Christmas, and also show how police help others, not just at Christmas, but throughout the entire year. In Tupelo I’m Allie Martin WCBI News.

The Secret Santa is hoping others will organize similar projects next Christmas.
