COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Half a century ago, Dr. James A. Boyd answered the call to pastor Zion Gate Missionary Baptist Church.
This week, the church will celebrate his 50th anniversary.
Boyd was just 22 years old when he accepted the call and says he had a small congregation of mostly senior citizens.
He says one of his main goals was to make the church a full-time ministry. He acknowledges that his family life suffered because of his dedication in the early years.
Fifty years later, Boyd is helping the church go to the next level with the construction of a new facility. The sanctuary will seat 450 on the first floor and an additional 225 in the balcony. The building will also include a large fellowship hall and classrooms.
Boys says retiring is not in his plans. He says in addition to his duties at the church, he will spend time mentoring young ministers.
The church will host several celebration events this week.
Events Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday will be at the church.
A Friday night gala will be held at the Trotter Convention Center. Tickets will be available at the door.
