FULTON, MISS. (WCBI) – Student council members at one Northeast Mississippi school are bringing
Christmas cheer to a group of senior citizens.
As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, the young people are learning about the true spirit of the season through a program called “Angels for Seniors.”
From the moment the bus pulled up to the “Courtyards Community Living Center” the spirit of giving was on the minds and hearts of the students, and senior citizens.
The teenagers are part of the sixth to eighth grade student council at the Itawamba Attendance Center.
“We hope they gain a sense of what Christmas is really all about, it’s not always about getting and being on the receiving end, sometimes it’s nice to give and see the other people’s happiness,” said Emilie Robertson, 8th grade teacher.
Student Council members and their sponsors are part of a program called “Angels for Seniors. ”
It is the brainchild of the center’s activity director, who says the program began in October, and it allows students to adopt a resident, also known as an angel.
“This time of year, everybody is busy and they may not get as many visits as they would like and anytime the youth is involved, it reconnects them to what they need in the community,” said Keisha Davis.
“It means a lot to be with the young people, and see the children, it means
a lot,” said Resident Carolyn Lackey.
Senior citizens had gifts for the students, who say this is more than just a field trip.
“They don’t get a lot of visitors from others, so we come to help them out, make them feel special,” said eighth grader Grant Stephenson.
“We’ve been blessed in many many ways and to be able to bless someone else, that blesses me,” said eighth grader Olivia Tutor.
This project does not end when this party is over, students will continue visiting their adopted angels from time to time and the next big celebration is set for Valentine’s Day. There are more “angels” in need of adoption.
