Oxford High School Loses Heartbreaker To Wayne County In State Championship Game

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – It’s heartbreak one more time for the Oxford High School football team.

The Chargers lost to Wayne County 45-41 Saturday in the 5A state championship game, falling inches short of scoring what would have been the go-ahead touchdown. It’s the third-consecutive season that Oxford has lost in the state title game.

In Oxford’s final play from the one yard line, senior D.K. Metcalf was ruled down just shy of the goal line as time expired. The Chargers’ senior quarterback Jack Abraham ran it down to the one yard line on the previous play. Oxford players and coaches thought both of the final plays had a chance to be ruled a touchdown. The Chargers converted a 3rd and 13 the play prior to that with under :20 to play after starting the final drive with under two minutes remaining.

Wayne County took the lead on a touchdown pass to Ole Miss commit, and defensive tackle, Benito Jones.

Abraham set an Oxford High School single-game passing mark with over 500 yards. He finished with four touchdowns through the air.

It was a high-scoring affair in the first quarter. The Chargers built a 28-17 lead thanks to a 265-yard, two-touchdown performance from Abraham, a Tulane commit. He was 20-for-25 passing for 333 yards just in the first half. Sophomore Hiram Wadlington and Metcalf, an Ole Miss commit, both went over 100 yards receiving through the first two quarters.

Oxford led 35-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Chargers head coach Johnny Hill announced before the season began that he would retire after the final game.
