TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — A Tupelo attorney is countering a claim from the state’s top law enforcement officer that charges of embezzlement were dropped against a state representative simply because a key witness in the case died.
Earlier this month, Attorney General Jim Hood said he was dropping the criminal embezzlement charges against state Representative Brian Aldridge because Aldridge’s aunt, passed away in April.
Last summer, Aldridge, along with his parents, were indicted on charges of embezzling funds from the estate of Florence Aldridge, while Louis Aldridge had power of attorney over her estate when she was sick.
But Brian Aldridge’s attorney, T.K. Moffett, said a document filed by the attorney general, dropping the charges, states that there was not enough evidence against Brian Aldridge.
Also, Moffett has an affidavit signed by Louis Aldridge, admitting he forged his son’s name on a $1,000 check.
“Brian didn’t do anything wrong. I commend the Attorney General for dropping the charges because that was the right thing to do. In my opinion, Brian should have never indicted to begin with. This criminal prosecution against Brian Aldridge was over a thousand dollars. There was a thousand dollar check that his dad signed and gave to him as a wedding present and said ‘this is from your aunt Flo,” Moffett said.
Moffett says Brian Aldridge is now trying to rebuild his career. He is still a state representative. The case against his parents is still active.
