TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The Tupelo-Lee Humane Society is striving to make this a merry Christmas for pets and pet owners alike.
Not everyone was at the Mall on Black Friday, at least not all day. Some Christmas shoppers came to the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society shelter to adopt furry friends for Christmas. And Saturday more folks stopped by looking for a pet to bring cheer this holiday season. Jay Quimby is President of the Board.
“Well certainly pets make a great Christmas present but we always want people to remember too that it’s a life long commitment of the pet. But we’re actually having a Black Friday carryover. We’re doing a special on dogs for 45-dollars and cats at 25-dollars. So those are discounted rates. What that small fee covers is for the pet to be spade or neutered, micro-chipped, and his first round of shots,” he says.
And Quimby says there is really no set rule as to what pet is best for a particular family.
“Well what we always recommend is every pet has his own personality and coming in and really getting to know them and playing with them a little bit. They all have their own personality. Certainly this time of the year the puppies and kittens seem to be the most popular but we have a lot of mature dogs and cats that are certainly looking for a great home as well,” Quimby points out.
Tim McKinney and his family came to look.
“We’re looking for something that he can get along with. He loves them just as much as she does. We’ve already got two cats at the house, one inside and one outside,” Mckinney boasts.
And Quimby says this may be the last Christmas these pets will have to stay in this crowded and outdated facility.
A location on Cliff Gookin Boulevard will be the new home of the Tupelo Lee Humane Society. Quimby says they expect to break ground on the 2-million dollar facility within the next 60-days. And they hope that it will be open by this time next year.
“The new shelter is nearby,” he notes “It’s three times the size of our current shelter. It’s much more humane. It’s certainly setup for the most efficient operation of the shelter and certainly taking care of the animals in a more humane way,” he says.
Quimby says on Black Friday more pets were adopted then were brought in, and he hopes that trend continues right on through the holiday season.
