COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — After spending months behind bars, one of the women accused in the death of a Lowndes County man is out of jail on bond.
Lydia Martinez spoke with WCBI hours after being released from the Lowndes County jail about her son-in-law’s murder, and her future.
Martinez says she helped cover up his death to protect her grandchildren.
Her daughter, who’s charged with the homicide, is still locked up.
“Look at me. Do I look like a person that would kill somebody?” Martinez said. “I just want people to believe my story, to hear my side of the story.”
Martinez says she never wanted to hurt her son-in-law, Manuel Vasquez, by helping her daughter, Christina, cover up his murder.
Everything that happened still haunts her, and she says she hasn’t been able to sleep since she’s been locked up.
“Nobody knows what I went through,” Martinez said. “It was a nightmare for me. And it was like I told God, forgive me for saying this, but I went through hell and back to save my grandchildren’s lives.”
Jail wasn’t much better. Martinez says she was treated like an animal there, being locked up in a metal cage.
She’s looking forward to staying with her sister in Colorado.
“I just want to get away from here,” she said. “From everything, from the jail.”
She feels blessed to be free for now, until she has to come back to Columbus next year for her trial.
“God is the only one that knows what happened,” Martinez said. “And I’m just like, I guess I just have to wait it out, you know? I try to make myself strong every day.”
Both Lydia and Christina Martinez have trial dates set for February.
