Video: Student Athlete of the Week: Baldwyn Bearcats, Football

(WCBI) — The Baldwyn Bearcats are still in the hunt for a shot at a state championship appearance, but still have some worked left to do before reaching their goal. WCBI’s Jonathan Flippo has more from Baldwyn as the Bearcats prepare for a North Half Final showdown with East Webster.

The Baldwyn Bearcats Football Team are led by eleven seniors who have won ten straight games and now are one game away from playing for a State Championship. Baldwyn won their first State Championship in school history back in 2008. This team had struggles earlier in the season, but now feel they are peaking at the right time.

“The season is gone a little like we expected. You know what to expect once you get to the playoffs, but we’ve kind of persevered and being injury free which is always a big key and were kind of sitting right here where we hope that we would be,” said Head Football Coach Michael Gray.

“We have had a lot of ups and downs, but you know we still play through it and we’re having a successful season so far,” said Senior Fullback Marquavious Patterson.

“We started off a little rough. We had two losses. We came back and we got back right. We started working, started progressing, started getting better and we’ve just started moving up and haven’t looked back since,” said Junior Lineman jimmy Tyes.

“This Baldwyn Bearcats Football Team have won three straight playoff games defeating Eupora, JZ George, and Calhoun City. Now they turn their attention to a team that they’re very familiar with. A team that beat them last year in the second round of the playoffs. They turn their attention to East Webster Friday night at 7 p.m and they say this is a very good team that can’t be overlooked,” said WCBI Sports Reporter Jonathan Flippo.

“They are a real quality ball club. They have a really really good quarterback and he does a really good job of getting them where they need to be. it’s going to be a real battle Friday night against two good football teams,” Gray said.

“They are a pretty good football team. They’re the ones that put us out last year, so you know we are looking for a little revenge to come back in and go ahead an win it,” Patterson said.

“We know that they are a pretty hard nose team. We’re going to have to be prepared for them. We’re going to watch film just like every other team. We just got to be ready for them,” Tyes said.

After Friday night in Baldwyn, one of these team teams will be playing in Oxford next weekend for a shot at the Class 2A State Championship.
