Video: Inmate Vegetable Garden Pays dividends for Citizens and Inmates

PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) -A project started by one sheriff continues to save taxpayers money and provides work for inmates. Pontotoc County Sheriff Leo Mask estimates there is a two years’ supply of fresh vegetables for the county jail. All the produce comes from gardens maintained by Pontotoc County Jail inmates.

The sheriff says inmates work the garden year round and it has been a benefit in many ways.

“It saves the county a lot of money, we do not have to buy any vegetables , we grow all of our vegetables we use, it gives the inmates something to do and we , have inmates working in the garden and stuff, and it keeps them busy and they like doing it.”

Inmates work gardens on several plots of land.
