WEIR, Miss. (WCBI) — The average life expectancy world wide is about 70 years old but a Choctaw County woman is defying those odds.
Carrie Potts was born on August 10th, 1910. She’s now 104 years old and says she may have the key to living 100 plus years.
Family and friends gathered at Mill Spring Baptist Church in Weir to honor Potts. She never had children of her own but she dedicated her life to raising her husband’s seven children. Now the family is just thankful she’s still with them.
“It means the world to me because it is so rare that you actually see someone reach 104. It just feels my heart and it just overwhelms me and my family to be here at this particular moment to share this with her,” says Maria Cooper, Potts’ Great Granddaughter.
The ceremony included a poem recital and a gospel music tribute. Things are a lot different now than when Potts was a young woman but her family says she is still alert and going strong.
“All the electronics, everything that we have now, they didn’t have that back then. They had to work in the fields. So it’s been a long journey as I said before but she has been there all the way. She’s still just as energetic as ever and we thank God for that,” says Letha Johnson, Potts’ Granddaughter.
Mrs. Carrie Potts is a member of a special group. Currently, there are over 50,000 Americans who 100 or older.
