A major insurance carrier is changing the way it reimburses for child births.
And Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi says it’ll mean healthier babies, fewer costly interventions, and lower overall health care expenses.
Starting January 1st, the insurer no longer will pay for elective deliveries before the 39th week.
The new policy does not apply to naturally occurring and medically necessary deliveries. Most experts agree babies born after 39 weeks are healthier and suffer fewer expensive complications. That’s important in a state with the nation’s highest rate of infant mortality and premature births.
Statewide, 38 of 44 birthing hospitals are taking part in a campaign to reduce early deliveries.
