LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A last summer outing before school starts turn tragic for a Clay County family.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says 3-year-old Landon Henson drowned at about 3 p.m. Sunday while on the Tombigbee River with his parents and older siblings.Merchant says the family had been on the river about an hour when they docked at a sand bar on the Lowndes County side of the river just north of the Dewayne Hayes park area.
The parents were sitting in the boat and Landon was playing on the bank while the other kids played in the water when the group noticed Landon Missing. Merchants says the family thought he’d scrambled up the bank and began searching there.
Other friends arrived and started looking, too, and found his body about 24 feet from the bank in about five feet of water. Merchant said Landon was the only family member not wearing a life vest.
“They were just out fora little fun before school started. It turned tragic so quickly. It’s a tough, tough thing for them,” Merchant said.
