Video: Tupelo Firefighters Learn How To Spot Possible Signs Of Human Trafficking

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) –  Firefighters in one area city now have a better understanding of what to look for to spot possible human trafficking victims.

For two days, an organization known as “Free International” has held workshops at Cornerstone Church, to help Tupelo firefighters be more aware of red flags of human trafficking.

Experts say 67 percent of human trafficking victims say they had some form of contact with a first responder during their captivity.

Firefighters now have a better idea of what to look for.

“You’re looking for someone in a controlled situation, they are not permitted to speak, there’s always someone who controls the conversation, if the person seems to be fearful,” said Jody Dyess, of Free International.

“We all love kids, and being firemen, we want to make sure we take care of the people, especially children, so no one wants to see a child mistreated. I would hate to know I missed an opportunity to save a child,” said Romeco Traylor, Training Officer with the Tupelo Fire Department.

Free International encourages anyone with information on possible sex trafficking to contact their local authorities, or the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
