MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — A lot of Mississippi drivers are confused: Do they need an inspection sticker or not?
Attempts by lawmakers to repeal the law are fueling the questions.
Critics of vehicle inspections say they’re a waste of time and actually cost the state money. Others say inspections create much-needed revenue, and are used to increase safety. No matter what side you’re on, drivers in Mississippi are required to have a yearly inspection.
“I’ve heard that it was going to be discontinued July 1,” Johnny Hall, who needs an inspection, said.
Some drivers are confused about the state law requiring a vehicle inspection. Though legislators have attempted to repeal the requirement, state law still mandates that operating motor vehicles are inspected every year.
“I’ve never seen anything in the news or heard anything on TV about it,” Hall said. “So I came out to make sure that I was safe so I came out and got a safety sticker.”
The Sticker Inspection Act became law in 1977, but some critics say the inspections aren’t thorough or effective.
“I’m driving an almost brand-new car out there and I’ve got to get one, which I think is ridiculous,” Dennis Haines, who also needs an inspection, said.
Still, no matter how old the vehicle is, it must be inspected and certified by a professional mechanic.
“It’s very important because a lot of cars have busted windshields, tail lights aren’t working and tint is a big deal. Tint is too dark,” Vehicle Inspector Sonny Cole said.
Nearly 40,000 tickets were written in 2013 because motorists didn’t have an up-to-date sticker. While some believed the law had changed, others say they simply forget to get the inspection.
“I wish there was a way they could remind you somehow that you better get down there and get your sticker or you’re going to get a fine,” Haines said.
Inspections usually take about 5 minutes. If you are ticketed for not having a current inspection sticker, it will cost you $147.
