MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — School is back in session, and one bus driver in our area is asking motorists to pay closer attention as children get on and off the buses.
Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley also drives a school bus and on Wednesday, Gurley says he was letting a child off his bus near Lackey when a truck passed, failing to slow down or stop.
Gurley caught up with the truck, and took a photo of the driver. He has filed a report, and charges will be filed against the driver.
Gurley says it is not an isolated incident.
“You see it way too often, you see it almost everyday, you wonder if they’re coming around, you wonder if they’re going to stop, you got kids up on the bus, you got kids moving around, kids hollering, trying to distract you, but when you stop, you got to be looking around,” Gurley said.
A first offense for passing a stopped school bus with its lights flashing carries a fine of up to 750 dollars and 90 days in jail.
A second offense can mean a 15 hundred dollar fine and up to one year in the county jail.
