One Tupelo Youth Hurt, Another Jailed After Morning Shooting
(TUPELO, MS) -WCBI – One 14 year old is at the hospital and the othjer in jail after an early morning shooting in Tupelo. Police say the two juveniles were at a home on South Highland street when one shot the other in the ear. It’s not certain if that gunshot was deliberate or an accident. The shooter then went to school at Tupelo Middle School where he was taken into custody shortly after classes started. He hid the gun on school property but the unloaded weapon was recovered . Tupelo Middle School s well as nearby Pierce Street Elementary and the Fillmore center were all on lockdown until the situation was settled. Following the incident Tupelo Schools issued the following statement :
We want to let you know that an incident occurred off-campus today that led to a partial lockdown at 9:50am at Pierce, Fillmore, and TMS due to a student being detained and taken into custody by the Tupelo Police Department. At 10:25, all students and staff were taken off of partial lockdown.
At this time, the TPD is investigating the incident which happened off-campus. What we know now is that the suspect was quickly apprehended by TPD and our School Resource Officers at Tupelo Middle School. Shortly after, a weapon was recovered by TPD, and TPD verified that it was not loaded. This is an on-going TPD investigation.
The safety of our students is our number one priority. Superintendent Dr. Gearl Loden said , “As a father of a student at TMS, I personally want to thank our TMS staff and TPSD for such a rapid response to this incident.”
