Video: Aurora Flight Sciences Official Speaks on Future of Unmanned Aircraft

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — With unmanned aircraft almost certain to be the wave of the future for civilian and commercial use in the next 20 years, it’s an exciting time for manufacturers.

The director of development for Lowndes County’s Aurora Flight Sciences said today the Federal Aviation Administration is late developing rules for drones, because many already are being used by everything from photographers to security companies.

But standards for training and licensing, height limits depending on the size of the unmanned craft, and other limits, are coming soon.

“There are privacy concerns by many people, and I think they’re warranted, although you only have to look at stoplight cameras, and cameras in police cars, and police helicopters flying overhead to see that our privacy is already compromised,” Greg Stewart with Aurora Flight Sciences said. “So that’s perhaps the least of our issues. We want to make sure they are flown in a responsible manner, and don’t endanger people, and don’t endanger flying aircraft.”

Stewart spoke today to the Columbus Rotary Club.
