TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -An organization that helped girls in need for more than 20 years has handed its facilities over to a non profit that provides care for the terminally ill. Board members of the Gardner Simmons Home handed over keys to its facility to Sanctuary Hospice House. Last month, the Gardner Simmons Home, which had been renamed Providence House, and took care of pregnant girls in abusive situations, had to shut its doors because of changing government regulations. The 4 bedroom home is now in the hands of Sanctuary Hospice House, which provides care for those suffering from terminal illnesses.
“They’re not sure what they are going to use it for. They’re kind of waiting to see what their board decides , maybe put together a small committee and pray about it. That is one thing we are very pleased with is it will be able to service others in this community.”
Gardner Simmons opened 26 years ago . It was named after Margaret Gardner and Robin Simmons. They were Chi Omega sorority sisters who were hit by a truck on Highway 6 near Oxford as they took part in a walkathon for the sorority.
