COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Dozens of high school students from across the state are at MUW this week for a unique educational program.
Students are getting a head start earning college credits and finding ways to give back to communities all over the world.
“Most people think we would be in the classroom but we spend a lot time building communication and team work and then we can come out here and really see it put to work,” says high school senior, James Long, who is participating in the Mississippi Governor’s School this summer.
MUW is hosting 70 high school students for the 3-week residential program, Mississippi Governor’s School. Scholars from across the state learn leadership skills, earn college credits and volunteer. This year the students spent their Day of Service working with Operation Ukraine.
“What we’re doing is taking these Gatorade buckets and we’re washing them out to send over to Haiti, Ukraine, other countries over seas, for them to be able to go get clean water,” says Resident Assistant, Harli Eaves.
“Water is so vital to survive and it seems so silly to us when we have it so available, that it’s not so available to other people. These buckets help them grab their water because it’s only turned on two or three times a week.” says Hallie Pimprel, a high school senior in the MSG program.
Mississippi Governor’s School began in 1981 and is designed to promote academic and creative experiences for rising high school juniors and seniors.
“Mississippi Governor’s School really teaches you about leadership and not only about helping people, but about helping people help themselves which is what we’re doing here,” says Pimprel.
For over 30 years, MSG has provided more than 4,300 students with an opportunity to serve the community, learn the value of team work and to become leaders of the next generation.
Mississippi Governor’s School is free for the students attending and is sponsored by the State Legislature.
