ITAWAMBA COUNTY, MISS. (WCBI) –  Authorities in Itawamba County say they are still trying to find out what led to the fatal stabbing of a 65 year old woman Thursday evening.

It was shortly after 6 Thursday night when an alarm company representative notified authorities of a possible disturbance at this house on Mount Gilead Road.

When deputies arrived, they found 65 year old Sharon Rose Jackson inside the home , with multiple stab wounds.

She was dead at the scene.  Meantime, deputies searched the area behind Jackson’s home, and heard a voice.

Officers say they chased 52 year old Jimmy Carpenter into nearby woods, where a struggle ensued, before he was arrested.

Carpenter is charged with first degree murder and that will be enhanced, because of Johnson’s age and disability.

“There has been lots of evidence recovered, including weapons that were in the house, is that the weapon, that’s for the crime lab to find out,  and that’s part of the evidence collection, there are several pieces of evidence that have been collected and are at the crime lab being processed at this time,” said Lt. Mike Newlin, of the Itawamba County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities believe Carpenter was acting as a caregiver for Johnson.
Carpenter is expected to make an initial appearance Monday morning. If convicted, he a double life sentence, without parole.
