Video: Motion Delay Granted In Winona Murder Case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi prosecutors have been given more time to oppose a death row inmate’s request for the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his appeal of his conviction in the deaths of four people at a Winona business.

Curtis Giovanni Flowers filed the petition June 23 with the nation’s high court.

Prosecutors must now respond to the petition by Aug. 28.

Flowers had been convicted of capital murder four times in the fatal shootings of Tardy Furniture store owner Bertha Tardy and three employees.

The fourth conviction came in 2010. The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld his death sentence last fall. The court’s majority denied Flowers’ arguments that prosecutors made misstatements to the Montgomery County jury about witness identification, Flowers’ actions on the day of the slayings and other evidence.
