Video: Tupelo Unveils Latest Civil War Marker on Heritage Trail

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The history and heritage of Tupelo was recognized Tuesday at the unveiling of the sixth marker on the city’s Civil War Trail.

The new marker is at First Baptist Church. Once known as Tupelo Baptist Church, which served as a field hospital during the Battle of Tupelo-Harrisburg in July 1864. Soldiers from both the Confederate and Union Armies were treated at the church.

The markers help visitors better understand the area’s Civil War history.

“Cultural and heritage tourism is one of the fastest growing tourism sectors in the travel industry and we wanted to cater to that by making sure our story is told accurately and in a way that is easy to obtain and understand for our visitors.”

Eleven markers have now been placed as part of the Heritage Trails Enrichment Program.
