MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Help will soon be on the way from the state of Mississippi to hundreds affected by last Monday’s tornadoes.
The state legislature today approved $17 million to help pay for recovery.
House and senate members agreed on the funding during a brief special legislative session.
Though Governor Phil Bryant had said he would ask for up to $20 million, lawmakers believe the $17 million will cover costs until at least January 2015 when a new session convenes.
A total of 23 tornadoes struck Mississippi, killing 14 people and causing millions in damage.
In addition to paying for debris removal, the state will also loan money to local governments for other expenses.
