COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Speed, adrenaline and competition. You’ll find it at the Columbus Speedway.

“Ain’t nothin’ else like it,” said driver Hunter Carroll.

“If it’s open in Columbus we’re here,” said Shay Knight.

“It’s a blast. See some wrecks, see some good racing, it’s fun,” driver Lee Ray said.

For 50 years the Columbus Speedway has provided quality entertainment nearly every weekend. The dirt track in East Lowndes County is a second home to many fans and drivers. It’s created a racing family, with a competitive spirit.

“When the lights come up and the sun goes down, the competitive spirit kicks in. Just like anything else, they want to win,” Columbus Speedway announcer Curt Smith said.

“Every now and then you butt heads and it might be a week or two before you talk to each other, but it’s a good deal week in and week out,” Knight said.

“Reckon I just have a crazy bone in my body. It’s the adrenaline, it’s fun,” said driver Harold Trimm.

The Columbus Speedway has a fan friendly atmosphere and you’re bound to see some good races. But crashes?

“We try not to wreck, knock on wood, other than a quarter panel here from just having to beat somebody out. We try to keep the fenders on them and use our heads. There’s a lot of money that goes into these things,” said Knight.

“The baddest bullring in the South. You’ll see side-by-side action and it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat,” Smith said.

Columbus Speedway is located off Highway 50 on 660 Hutcherson Road near the Alabama state line. They are recovering from some storm damage. The next race is scheduled May 17th at 7:30 p.m. For more information call (662) 241-6262 or visit, http://www.columbusspeedway.net/
