TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) –The National Guard plays a big role in helping Mississippians get back on their feet after natural disasters. That’s one reason a bill moving through the U. S. Senate doesn’t sit well with Mississippi Lieutenant Governor, Tate Reeves. He and other lieutenant governors throughout the nation oppose budget cuts to the National Guard.
As he toured Tupelo, Reeves saw the Guard’s work up close.Reeves says the proposal would be disastrous.
“When they’re called upon they step up and do heroic work,” said Reeves. “[This is] something my lieutenant governor colleagues and I believe very strongly, we sent letters to the administration that potential cuts to the National Guard at the state level is not the right thing to do, they’re too vitally important to our safety abroad and too vitally important to our communities here in Mississippi.”
The proposed cuts would return funding to a pre 9-11 level.
