GORDO, Al. (WCBI) — “He really was not only my son but I considered him my best friend.”
Butch Park is having a hard time realizing his son, 25 year old Cason Park is gone.
“For one reason or another, Saturday night he wrote us a letter and said he was going to drive as far as he could in the car. Had his backpack with him and I guess he was going to try and travel,” said Park.
Mississippi Highway Patrol says Park was traveling West on Highway 82 in Oktibbeha County when his car broke down. Investigators say Park began walking when he was struck from behind by a vehicle and killed. A motorist notified MHP after noticing a backpack and clothes scattered on the highway.
“The motorist saw that and said something doesn’t belong there. Something’s not right about that. So he turned around, came back and looked. That’s when he discovered the young man lying on the side of the roadway and notified us,” said Sgt. Criss Trunipseed, Public Information Officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Judging from the debris, investigators believe it was a silver vehicle.
“We have found some pieces of the car from the front bumper. We don’t have a make or model but a silver vehicle with damage to the front left. Possibly down the left side. Possibly a broken windshield,” said Sgt. Turnipseed.
As MHP continues piecing together the crash site, Butch and his family are praying someone steps forward to give their son the justice he deserves.
“We’d like to know. It’ll give us closure. Because it’s wrong! And it’s not how you treat a human. Whoever did it knew they did it. I can’t beat myself and dwell on it right now, I’m just not in that position to do that. At this point, we’re just trying to get through the next hour,” said Park.
Visitation for Cason will be held this Thursday from 12:30 to 2pm at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Gordo. His funeral will also be at the church starting at 2. It is open to the public.
