NEMCC MOSA Students Place in Top 3 at State-Wide Conference

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (Press Release) — A pair of students from Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Student Association (MOSA) showed that the college not only prepares them for classroom work but also provides them with real-world knowledge in late March.

Brooke Crenshaw of Rienzi and Ariel Ford of Corinth captured third place in the Scholars Bowl competition at the annual Organization for Associated Degree Nursing – Mississippi Chapter (M-OADN)/ Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Student Association (MOSA) convention held at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Vicksburg March 27-28.

Prior to the competition, each participating school had to select two individuals from its chapter that would represent the school in the Scholar’s Bowl Competition.

Made up of multiple choice questions that were previously submitted by nursing faculty throughout the state, the scholar’s bowl competition not only challenged students on how well they knew the material but how each would perform with real-world problems.

Northeast’s MOSA has been active on the Booneville campus throughout the 2013-14 school year by holding various blood pressure clinics that help not only faculty, staff and students keep their blood pressure in check but the clinics are open to members of the surrounding community as well.

MOSA has also had a presence at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Tupelo and the local organization is an active member in the fund-raising efforts of the Ronald McDonald Foundation at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by collecting pull tabs. The Ronald McDonald House serves not only St. Jude patients but also families alike and provides families with a place to stay in Memphis as children seek treatment that is expected to take a little as eight days or as long as three month (90 days).

Mississippi Organization of Associate Degree Nursing is built on providing associate nursing students with leadership, service, and responsibility skills that they will carry in the workplace after graduation.

In addition to helping the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and its blood pressure clinics, the local MOSA organization has also held a blood drive on the Booneville campus and serves as an Advantage Hospice volunteer along with hosting an open house for the college’s health science department in Childress Hall during the latter portion of October.

Active in the community, Northeast’s nurses organization also held a chili fund-raiser in November and provided holiday gifts to area nursing home residents in December.
