ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Hopes of turning the old Aberdeen Depot into a community facility are coming back to life. Main Street Aberdeen is in line for part of a $250,000 federal grant to turn the historic site into a cannery, farmers market or other facility. Main Street Director Ann Tackett updated aldermen tonight on the proposals and asked them to get behind the effort. A group will pay a two-day visit in April to discuss ideas with the community.
A community effort three years ago spent $40,000 to stabilize the aging 5,000 square foot building. At more than 150 years old, it is the oldest standing depot in the state. Union soldiers missed it when ordered to burn all railroad depots during The Civil War. It stands between the Aberdeen Electric and Fire Departments in an area where the railroad once ran.
