LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Residents in the Drake Hill community of Lowndes County are stunned after 2 sheriff’s deputies were shot in the line of duty. Deputies were sent to the home of suspect Kent Coscia on Drake Circle after family members requested authorities check on his condition. Neighbors describe the incident like a scene from a Hollywood movie.
“The next thing you knew, they were going to the door and then there were shots fired. You saw a policeman hit the ground and then ambulances and cops and everything. That’s basically all I can tell you because it was just a shock,” says Drake Hill resident Lisa Ratliff.
“It was scary. It was because this is a really safe neighborhood and I’m also an exchange student so it’s kind of weird, that happening,” says Madeleine Hamer, a Drake Hill resident.
Neighbors say several members of law enforcement live in Drake Hill and knowing the deputies personally makes the incident more difficult to cope with.
“Knowing who they are going in there. Knowing you know these people and they’re trying to protect. Then seeing the gun shots and hearing that. It was just horrible. People need to be praying for these families,” says Michelle Robbins, who lives across the street from Coscia’s home.
Drake Hill Resident Eric David says he didn’t witness the incident but wanted to make sure things were safe for his family.
“I come back here to see what was going on I’ve got a child that gets off the bus in the afternoon and I just want to make sure she’s safe,” says David.
Residents say they believe this is an isolated incident but this will most certainly be a day they won’t forget.
