Video: Girls Scouts Donate Stuffed Animals to First Responders

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – Girl Scout Troop #23169 wants to serve other children in their community. The troop is sponsoring a stuffed animal drive with the West Point Police and Fire departments. First responders will give the stuffed toys to children who may need comforting after responders answer a call at their home. Troop Leader Jennifer Harper says it’s an opportunity for the Scouts to gain more visibility in the neighborhood.

“The numbers were really down for Clay County but I think we’re making a big comeback because we’ve got the Girls out there right now doing their cookie booths, selling their Girl Scout cookies. We’ve got the stuffed animal drive coming up that let’s the girls be part of the community,” says Harper.

The Troop was formed just last October. The girls are now earning Brownie badges, learning personal responsibility and simply having a good time.

“I like Girl Scouts because we do lots of fun thing,” says Brownie Girl Scout Aamelie Hunter.

“I like it because it helps girls to understand the way that big girls are gonna be,” says Linnsey Tucker, a Brownie Girl Scout.

Harper says the Girl Scouts will always be important because the organization prepares girls for adulthood.

“Twelve years from now these girls are going to be the women that are running our country, even if they’re housewives. They’re raising the next generation of women, so these girls aren’t going to be girls, they’re going to be women and they need to learn how to be strong women,” says Harper.

The troop plans to donate 500 stuffed animals. The girls meet every other Tuesday at 6pm behind the Central School.
