Historic “Old Armory” Building in Amory Gets New Look
AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Some of country music’s most famous artists are connected to this historic building in Amory and now the building has a new look and a new purpose.
The Amory community is celebrating the re-opening of the “Old Armory” building, a historic Mississippi landmark. Johnny Cash and Elvis both played in concert at the Old Armory. Historians say Elvis’ hit song “Blue Suede Shoes” was also written there. Hall of Fame musician “Fluke” Holland was the guest speaker and entertainment was provided by Nashville singer and Amory native John Milstead. Amory Mayor Brad Blalock says the building will be used to serve the community.
“We are hopeful that it’ll be used for civic events such as this whether it be a concert or it may be a group gathering for businesses. Or it may just be a rental for a nice wedding or a wedding reception. We’re very hopeful that it will be a civic center for Amory. It’s a very important asset for our community,” says Blalock.
The event also included a film about the the building’s history. Mayor Blalock credits the Dalrymple Foundation for helping to fund the new renovations.
