MISSISSIPPI STATE, MS (WCBI)-When most people think of earthquakes in the U.S. They think of California, but three of the most powerful earthquakes in recorded history occurred along the Mississippi River. The New Madrid Seismic Zone affects parts of several Mid Western and Southern states, including Mississippi, but most people in this part of the country are not prepared for a major earthquake. That was Greg Hempen’s message today at Mississippi State. The geophysicist shared his latest research on the New Madrid faultline, and the need for emergency preparations.
“I don’t believe anybody is ready for a major earthquake that could occur. A Significant event is likely, and we all need to be more prepared”
The New Madrid Earthquake of 1812 is believed to have been a magnitude 7 point 7, one of the strongest in the Continental U.S.
