CORINTH, Miss. (WCBI) – It was three decades ago when the Caterpillar Company opened a plant in Corinth. Since then the company has expanded several times there and as WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, a new expansion is unveiled today.
For its latest Corinth expansion, Caterpillar invested more than 14 million dollars . Workers at this plant will produce C175 remanufactured engines. Those engines are primarily used to power huge mining trucks that are larger than an average size house.
The project will create 30 new jobs.
“It’s just a great day, anytime you have opportunity for citizens and surrounding area, it’s just a great thing, plus it also helps the tax base a little also,” said Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin.
Caterpillar executives took Governor Phil Bryant on a tour of the new facility. The governor says Caterpillar’s decision shows that Mississippi is a pro business state.
“It’s our workforce, it’s our business climate , tax structure all those things together and the working together from the mayor’s office, city council , supervisors, MDA, governor’s office, cooperation pays off in a team sport like economic development,” Gov. Bryant said.
Once this plant is fully operational it will take workers only a few days to bring old engines back to life through the remanufacturing process. In fact, the Corinth plant is Caterpillar’s lead facility for large engine remanufacturing worldwide.
“We find that employees in Mississippi are some of the best we have anyplace in the world. They are very committed, very focused, very loyal to the company and our values, investments, teamwork, extremely well. They are well educated, capable,” said Gregory Folley, of Caterpillar, Inc.
The big engines are big business for Caterpillar. Also, remanufactured engines provide customers with the same performance and reliability at a fraction of the cost of a new product, while reducing impact on the environment.
This is the latest in a recent string of economic development news for Corinth. Recently, Mississippi Silicon announced it was opening a plant and this spring, Cracker Barrel will open at the intersection of Highway 45 and Highway 72.
