ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A tragic day in Itawamba County. Four people are dead, including a three month old baby.
The Evergreen community is stricken with grief and shocked this evening.
“We go outside and go next door and we find out the trailer is on fire,” says Gina Roberts.
Gina Roberts and her two children woke up early Tuesday morning to the smell of smoke and the sight of flames. Her neighbor’s home was engulfed in flames.
“One gentleman that was in the house was able to get two kids out safely. So he saved their life. He went back to try and save some others but the fire was too much for him to endure so he had to come back out,” says Captain Jason Dickinson.
Captain Dickinson says the family of nine lived in the mobile home. Five were able to escape, but the mother and three children, including an infant, didn’t make it out.
“Sad, shocked, scared. I think everything,” says Roberts.
While the Ever Green community is mourning the loss of their neighbors, some are also using this tragic event to plan for the worst.
“If anything catches on fire any certain spot of the house we know where to get out. We that this morning right after that cause I never thought about it until then,” says Roberts.
Fire officials believe the blaze may have been sparked by a heater in the living room.
Captain Dickinson says this is a tragic reminder of the importance of fire safety.
“I’d make sure I didn’t have anything stacked next to the space heater I’d make sure it wouldn’t be able to turn over,” says Captain Dickinson.
Meanwhile, Roberts says she and other neighbors are stepping in to help this family in need.
“Say prayers for them cause they really need it. Tell Scotty I love him,” says Roberts.
“It’s very sad. We lost a family this morning,” says Captain Dickinson.
The Itawamba County Sheriff’s Department is working with the Red Cross to help the surviving family members.
