Gun Ammo Registration Bill
JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Ammunition is becoming harder to find and prices are rising, now one lawmaker wants ammo sales to become public record in Mississippi.
Representative Omeria Scott (D- District 80) has introduced House bill 231. It would require record keeping for the sale of pistol or rifle cartridges.
The name, address, driver’s license or social security number of the person purchasing the ammo would be recorded and made public.
Dealers would also be required to provide the number of cartridges and the date of the sale.
The bill would make it illegal to sell, give or lend the bullets to anyone under the age of 18 or anyone who is intoxicated.
Governor Phil Bryant released this statement about the bill: “Any bills that attempt to track ammunition, seize weapons or otherwise infringe upon the right of Mississippians to keep and bear arms are a frontal assault on the Second Amendment. I will not stand by and allow gun owner rights to be trampled in this state, and I will immediately veto such bills if they reach my desk.”
House Speaker Philip Gunn also issued a statement opposing the legislation: “The government does not have the right to know how many guns or how much ammo I possess. The bills that are being pushed in the Mississippi Legislature forcing registration of ammo are dead on arrival in the House. We will always stand on the side of constitutional rights of gun owners.”
