Driver Who Destroyed A West Point House Hospitalized & Charged

WEST POINT, Miss. (Press Release) —  New Year’s Eve proved to be a night of destruction for a home on North Division Street in West Point. At around 11:30 pm officers were dispatched to a vehicle accident in which a motorist had driven his vehicle into a home.

Upon arrival officers discovered that due to the impact of the vehicle the home appeared to be destroyed and the make and model of the car that ran into the house couldn’t immediately be determined. An injured driver was still on the scene and an ambulance was dispatched. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the driver, 25 year old Latterishurn Robinson of 2220 Dr. Sears Road in West Point, was traveling south on North Division when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and stuck a utility pole.

Due to excessive speed the vehicle left the roadway, struck the house and also impacted another vehicle that was parked at the residence. According to the investigative report it appears that the vehicle still had enough force to spin out and strike the house a second time. Both the home and the both vehicles sustained very heavy damage. Three people were inside the home at the time of the incident (including a 1 year old child) but none of the occupants reported any injuries.

Chief Brinkley of the West Point Police Department says, “Fortunately, no one was injured due to the fact that they were in the back part of the home when the car hit the house. We’re confident in saying that alcohol played a part in this incident and upon the completion of this investigation we intent to prosecute Mr. Robinson to the fullest extent of the law. We have already consulted with the District Attorney’s Office about charges. ”

Mr. Robinson is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries in this mishap at the North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. He has been initially charged with DUI, reckless driving, no insurance and driving with a suspended license. Additional charges may be pending and the department also has outstanding warrants from previous charges on this individual.

Although the extent of the damage is great, Chief Brinkley explained that state statue has no provision to allow for misdemeanor charge to be upgraded to felonies based on the amount of property damage alone. “We expect some civil actions may be filed as a result of this incident”, Brinkley said.
