COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – September 11th will be remembered as one of the most tragic days in American history and today one brave veteran who was at the Pentagon that fateful day was recognized in Columbus.
The Columbus community gathered at the Municipal Complex this Veteran’s Day to honor those who’ve served their country. Veterans in attendance came out to express their deep appreciation and respect for fellow service men and women.
“Even having served myself, still there were so many besides me that did so much for so many. It’s one way of saying thank you,” says Coast Guard veteran, Jerry Turner.
“It means a lot to me because I can think about the the ones that wasn’t able to make it back like I did. In fact, I thank God for giving me an opportunity to attend this today,” says Jessie Harris, an Army veteran.
Retired Air Force Master Sargent, Marie Lewis was the special guest at the ceremony. Lewis was working just 200 yards away from the attack at the Pentagon September 11th. She worked 12 hour shifts manning the smoldering building for weeks and was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Other veterans at the event say protecting this nation gave them tremendous pride.
“I’ve been around for 71 years and then in the service for 20 and 23 years with the Civil Service. I fought for my country and I love it,” says Air Force veteran Jim Helton.
Lewis also served in Afghanistan just three months after the attacks. The event was hosted by the Lowndes County Veterans Museum which honors Veterans four times a year.
