HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) – As the weather cools down, nothing beats a good bowl of chilli and a buttery slice of cornbread. The folks in Houlka hosted their 1st Annual Cornbread Festival.
Activities for the Festival started early this morning with a 5K run and bike ride on the newly opened Tanglefoot Trail. There were vendors, music and of course, cornbread. Festival goers were able to sample and judge the cornbread entries until noon and the cornbread was later served to festival attendees. Dorothy Coggins was the first place winner.
“I entered two cornbreads. A regular cornbread that I have with my vegetables and I enterd a Georgia cornbread which is sweet cornbread. It does not have any corn meal in it but it has four and two cups of pecans. I think they liked it because it was sweet,” says Coggins.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Greater Houlka Community Fund.
