COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Tennessee Valley Authority and Governor Phil Bryant were in Columbus today to recognize Severstal for its energy efficiency. A check for nearly $2.6 million was presented to Severstal. Through TVA’s Major Industrial Program, the steel plant was able to reduce its total energy use by 25 million kilowatt-hours. That’s enough to power 2,000 average TVA homes. Severstal officials say they’re proud to help move the state forward in energy efficiency.
“It supports what the government is trying to do in the state of Mississippi, which is through efficiency improvement and conservation, basically expanding the electricity that would be available for more industrial development,” says Vice President and General Manager Madhu Ranade.
“It took a lot of people working very hard for many months. For about 14 months from conception to final metering of the project,” says Project Manager Barry Steele.
Governor Bryant says the state has worked diligently to be a leader in energy conservation and now it’s paying off.
“It is a new state of the art system they’re using. We hope to spread it all across MS and save for more manufacturing keeping costs low,” says Bryant.
TVA estimates that Severstal will save $1.6 million a year in energy costs. The $2.6 million payment is the largest to date for the TVA energy-saving program.
