STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -Domestic Violence is a subject most people try to avoid, but it affects more people than we realize.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey shows that nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have been raped in their life time.

One in 4 women have been the victim of severe physical violence, while 1 in 7 men have been a victim.

But the national Clothesline Project seeks to bring awareness to the number of people affected by domestic violence.

The project is a visual display of the different types of violence, and it can help begin the healing process.

The clothesline project at Mississippi State University is part of a national wide campaign.

Assistant Director of Health Education and Wellness and Sexual Assault, Leah Pylate says, “If we can bring awareness to the topic area, sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking, that will go a long way. But we also don’t want to stop there. We don’t want to ignore it here at Mississippi State.”>

Each shirt color on display on the clothesline indicates a different kind of violence:
-Yellow: men and women who have been battered or assaulted
-Red, Pink, or Orange: men and women who have been raped or sexually assaulted
-White: men and women who have died of violence
-Blue or Green: men and women who are survivors of incest or child sexual abuse
-Purple: men and women who have been attacked because of their sexual orientation
-Black: men and women who have been attacked because of political reasons
