STEENS, Miss. (WCBI) — Getting back to the playoffs is the goal, and it won’t be nearly as deadly as it had been the last two years for the Immanuel Rams.
Being placed in the same division as Canton Academy, Leake Academy, and Manchester Academy can overwhelm just about any up and coming school.
It did so for the Rams, but now Immanuel is dropping down to MAIS Class A. With the move, the Rams are liking their chances to make a run at the postseason.
“Dropping down to Single A, we feel like with our numbers we can compete,” head coach Greg Watkins said. “We were playing the big schools and their numbers were double ours. As soon as we dropped down, we got excited about the possibilities of competing.”
The Rams bring back a strong team led by K.C. Cunningham and Luke Hudson. Coach Watkins believes with the unique training regiment they had in the off-season, that this year can be a special season.
“We started the first of June on workouts and we implemented Cross-Fit,” coach Watkins said. “They’ve worked hard and you can tell it with the guys and their attitudes.
“We have four guys returning on the offensive line. We’re hoping they can step up this year. We were able to move K.C. Cunningham back to running back and we picked up J.J. Swanigan. He has a big strong arm and we’re gonna air it out this year while having K.C. and his speed in the backfield.”
Immanuel starts the season on August 23rd hosting Delta Academy. The Rams join Carroll Academy, Greenville Christian, and Deer Creek in MAIS A-2 division this season.
