STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Emotions run high from both students and parents as the first day of school signifies another step towards adulthood.
Starkville High School freshman, Bradley Curtis, joined hundreds of other teenagers across the state in making the transition from 8th to 9th grade. The youngest of three in his family, his parents found themselves anxious, but excited, about their last child taking this big step.
His father, Clifton Curtis, said, “Especially in a larger school, I think there are so many opportunities there. I am looking forward to that for him.”
Cathy Curtis, Bradley’s mother, said, “We as parents, that’s our goal. That they, that they become independent, but it is hard. It is a hard thing to watch.”
Bradley said watching his two older brothers go through different experiences, such as the first day of high school, helped to calm his nerves beforehand.
Once at school, an Intro to Theater class helped ease him into the day, but Bradley had some adjusting to do with the new surroundings and bigger arena. That included a few unintentional detours.
He said, “I’ve gotten lost a couple of times. I got lost going to my locker, and I could not find my home room teacher.”
When it was all said and done, he said, “It feels a little bit different because some of the classes you’re taking with people besides people in your grade and you’ve just never done that before, but it still pretty much feels like school.
