WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI)- Marco Davidson heard the news on Saturday morning.
“After I got the phone call, I was just trying to keep a level head, a stable mind. I made it out there and I saw him laying down there. It was just like the worse feeling ever. Because I was just with him the night before. Had just talked to him that day and it’s just sad,” said Davidson.
His cousin and fellow Green Wave Football Coach Lushunn Bennett was gone. LuShunn was traveling West on East Tibbee Road when he lost control of his vehicle. The West Point native will best be remembered for his passion for life, lessons and children. Earlier this year, WCBI spoke to LuShunn. He kicked off a little league football program and made it his goal that children excelled beyond the gridiron.
“He just loved the kids and he loved doing what he did with them. He always taught them that books were important,” said Davidson.
And right now they’re finding it hard to move on without him.
“They’re not taking it too well. So me and the other coaches are trying to keep everyone with a level head. All we can do is pray,” said Davidson.
As they prepare to take the field this year, they are doing it in memory of their beloved coach.
“He’ll never be forgotten and we’re going to go out and try to win every game and have a successful season for him because that’s what he would’ve wanted. So we’re dedicating this season right here to Coach Shun,” said Davidson.
LuShunn Bennett’s family will hold a candlelight vigil this Thursday at 5 pm at the baseball field off 5th Street in West Point. Funeral arrangements are still being made.
