High School Football Tour: South Lamar

MILLPORT, Ala. (WCBI) – The good news for South Lamar is the football team has some pieces returning and a new coaching staff that’s implementing new schemes and a new mentality.

“Basically, we’re going to get in and we’re going to put in an offense and defense that fits our personnel,” head coach Shannon McGregory said. “We’re going to try to keep things as simple as possible and be well coached at each position to where we can execute the offense and also not give up big plays on defense.”

McGregory is in his first year, coming from Sparkman High.

That’s the good news. The bad news is South Lamar will try to rebound from an 0-10 season. The Stallions gave up the most points in their history, including 75 to Pickens County.

“There are some positions that I think we’re going to be really talented at and we just have to find the players to fill some of the holes,” McGregory said. “We’ve got a few players who really stand out.”

Specifically lineman Justin Cheeks and fullback Holden Fields. South Lamar switching to a Wing-T offense and doesn’t know who its quarterback will be.

McGregory said the guys who’re working this summer have a good mindset.

“The guys that we’ve been able to work with just this past week, that’s not an issue,” McGregory said. “It’s some guys that are walking the halls that you have to get out in order to get this thing turned around.”

He’s shooting for 30 guys by the start of the season.
