PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — Strength in numbers appears to be THE strength for the Cougars next season.
Head coach Roger Chism brings back a more experienced group and that starts up front with the offensive line leading the way.
“Our offensive line will have all of their starters back,” said coach Chism. “We have some running backs returning and they run hard. We have a new quarterback this year that has us excited. We hope he continues to get better and as he goes, so will we.”
South Pontotoc managed just one victory last season but three of their losses came by a touchdown or less.
This year it’s about playing the full 48 minutes and earning the win.
“We started really good but as the game went on we wore down,” coach Chism said. “I imagine our depth had something to do with that. We hope our depth is more experienced this year.”
It comes down to numbers and experience being in the favor of South Pontotoc this season. The Cougars struggled through division play the last two seasons but don’t anticipate having the same problem this year.
“Our kids know how to win now,” said coach Chism. “We had a real good spring and we won a couple games. Hopefully that momentum will carry over into the fall but we have to continue to run the football. It doesn’t matter what formation we’re in we have to be able to run.
“To be able to run, you need offensive linemen and that’s what we’re hanging our hat on in the hopes they gel real quick and have a good year like they did in the spring.”
