COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Palmer Home for Children in Columbus has been helping children in need since 1895. For the first time this week, 15 Palmer Home teens participated in a summer Leadership Camp hosted by the Leader State program at MSU.
“The students start out the week by doing an envisioning activity called Visual Explore. They look at about 300 iconic images and are asked to pick out the image that best captures their life dream,” says Dr. Cade Smith. While at the week-long camp, the teens are taught leadership and life skills.
By the end of the week, the Palmer Home children have learned to envision their futures through a series of exercises that include writing and a personality assessment.
“What we want students doing is thinking about the life that they desire at 27 years. Understanding where they are presently, what are their interests, what are their academic credentials and what are their academic credentials and then developing a plan that will lead to the life that they’ve envisioned for themselves at the age of 27,” says Dr. Smith.
College counselors and military advisors also spoke to the children throughout the week. Palmer Home for Children currently serves nearly 100 children in Columbus and near Hernando.
