Remembering elderly family during the holidays

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – If you ask 96-year-old Mary Brewer, she’ll tell you she’s one of the lucky ones.
Fortunately for her, Mrs. Brewer says her family always comes to keep her company, but that’s not always the story for others.
“My family is really wonderful,” Brewer said. “They come all the time they’re just right ready to take care of me anytime, but no some of them don’t ever have anyone come. I feel sorry for them. I don’t see how they make it. ”
Director of Marketing Rhonda Richardson says the holidays are a time to come together but oftentimes, family members get caught up in life.
“I think during this time of the year family and friends really just get busy during the holidays and sometimes are residents here aren’t able to just get out and do what their families are doing so sometimes they will sit in their rooms and get kind of lonely and kind of get forgotten,” Rhonda Richardson.
Brewer says they work to keep their senior citizens booked and busy.
“We will take them out we just got a brand new bus and so they are loving that and so we will put them on that bus and we will take them out and go see Christmas lights,” Brewer said. “We bring different communities, businesses, and organizations in we have several churches that pour into us.”
Richardson says it’s important to make the residents know they aren’t forgotten because once they go into their shells it’s hard to get them out.
“It’s like a domino effect. If they don’t come out and get engaged and do things then their health just starts going away,” Richardson said.
