Aberdeen’s city port set to make big comeback
ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – “That’s that multimodal completeness that Aberdeen will have with the completeness of this project,” said Aberdeen Mayor Charles Scott.
According to the mayor, this port hadn’t been fully functional in decades. Well, that’s all about to change.
As mayor of Aberdeen, Charles Scott has had a big goal in mind for the city, that’s finally coming into fruition with a new partnership at the port.
“In Aberdeen, in the last three years, we have attempted to revitalize our port. It has basically sat dormant for more than 20 years with the exception of Enterprise. It became low-hanging fruit for us. We felt like this was a product that would have an economic impact on our entire region but more definitely on Aberdeen. We saw this as an opportunity that we could build this port out, that we would affect our community for the next 40 years,” said Scott.
In 2021, the city received a $4 million grant to improve its railway systems at the port.
Scott said this was the final piece to the economic puzzle the city has been missing.
“It allows us to have the rail piece that’s going to connect to our water piece. We already have a road system here with 45. And we have two airports within 30 minutes from us to include the Monroe County Airport. That is significant in many ways because we can bring in different products from different avenues,” said Scott.
Scott said the port and railways aren’t the only source of the economic boom Aberdeen is experiencing.
“If you haven’t been to downtown Aberdeen in the last year or so, you are missing out on the economic development that is going on downtown. We have several entities that have gone and painted their buildings. We have Airbnbs that are being renovated. We have a city that has a spirit of growth at this point in time,” said Scott.
