Homeless advocate meets needs as temperatures drop
Mack Turner is seeking churches and others to help those who are on the streets
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lee County man is doing what he can to help the homeless and others in need.
In the parking lot of the old WIC building, across from the Salvation Army, Mack Turner was doing what he had done for the past 15 years.
Turner is the founder of United Brothers and Sisters, a ministry that helps the local homeless population. Turner was handing out items to protect the homeless from the cold. Under a nearby bridge, you can see makeshift camps some call home.
“We gave out new blankets, new sheet sets, hoodies, hats, caps, shirts,” Turner said.
Phil lives on the streets, in an abandoned building and said he was grateful for Mack’s Mission.
“It means the most. Means a lot to God. He gets blessed with this every day. People in Tupelo have been good to me; they really have,” Phil said.
Teneshia lives at the Jim Ingram Red Shield Lodge at the Salvation Army. She is looking for a home to call her own and said the unexpected gifts will help make Christmas a little brighter.
“I got some gifts for my kids, a little something for myself. Makes me feel better, happy,” Teneshia said.
Turner will be handing out gloves, caps, and blankets at the Salvation Army next week. He said he wasn’t going to stop, but he could always use more help.
“We can help, and I’m not going to rest until y’all get some help. I’m not going to rest,” Turner said.
Items for this distribution day were donated by Turner’s home church, Whitehill Missionary Baptist Church.
If you would like more information on United Brothers and Sisters, Turner said to give him a call at (662)488-5617.
