Columbus firefighters rescue dog from house fire on 15th Street North

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus home was damaged by fire Monday afternoon.

The fire was in the 1000 block of 15th Street North.

Fire Chief Duane Hughes said the damage was contained to a back bedroom of the home.

No one was there at the time of the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

“We had a fire that started in a bedroom. No one was home. They have a father, a son, and a dog; everybody’s out safely. Firefighters got here and got it put out pretty quickly. But we do know smoke alarms were not active and want to make sure our residents know we need to have active smoke alarms this time of year. Because this is the time of year to start seeing more fires coming up. So, make sure that you’re checking your batteries and everything is working properly,” said Columbus Fire Marshal Michael Walker.

Firefighters were able to rescue a dog.
